William IV — Historic Pub with Character, Better for Pints than Plates Located on Shepherdess Walk, William IV is a nearly 200-year-old pub that’s been lovingly restored, offering a cozy atmosphere, a solid drinks list, and a dining room upstairs that aims for elevated British fare. It’s charming, yes — but not without its quirks. Atmosphere & Style: Downstairs: classic pub energy with open fireplaces, board games, and a lively crowd Upstairs: candlelit dining room with a more serene, intimate vibe Nautical bunting and bright furnishings in the beer garden add a splash of colour Great for casual drinks, birthday gatherings, or a quiet weekday pint Food Highlights & Flaws: Guinness soda bread with Marmite butter — surprisingly excellent, rich and savoury Sunday roast — well-cooked meat, but let down by limp potatoes and bland gravy Guinness-glazed beef short rib — tender meat, but the glaze can be overpowering Sticky toffee pudding — solid dessert with good sponge and generous toffee sauce Overall: food sounds better on paper than it tastes — best to stick to snacks and sides Drinks & Service: Known for one of London’s finest pints of Guinness Good selection of beers and wines Staff are friendly and enthusiastic, especially about the beer garden Service is generally warm, though can be slow during busy hours
