The Roman Column stands in the Minster yard. Made in the first century by Legio IX Hispana, this 25-foot high column made of magnesian limestone was reused in the fourth century by Legion VI one of 16 columns supporting the walls of a basilica. It was discovered in 1969 under York Minster and placed here to celebrate the city's 1900 years since founded by the romans. There is a plaque on the column giving details of its history.
