Authentic homemade Indian food, as it is in India! If you’ve been to India, especially as a budget traveller, then you’ll know the authentic flavours of the street stalls. This place takes me back to the bustling boulevards of Indian villages, towns and cities. The basic corridor restaurant and simple wooden tables and chairs, with tiled walls and floor, the sink perched on the sidewall offering free pour it yourself tap water, the glass counter at the end showcasing the daily batches of curries with piles of crispy samosas and puri nans decking the top, and of course the happy Indian smiling faces welcoming you in. Conveniently located directly along Whitechapel’s main road, pretty close to the underground station on the opposite side, a really easy place to order, with everything displayed clearly above the counter with pictures and accompanying prices, outside too so you know what you’re getting into before you enter. Absolutely perfect for budget healthy food hunters. All natural ingredients freshly prepared each day. I ordered dhal, veg curry, rice and somosa - £5 As I savoured the tantalising tastes of turmeric and the fresh citrusy coriander leaf floating in my dhal, I couldn’t help thinking... “How long all this took to create, compared to how long it’ll take me to eat it all.” I’m not just thinking this dish and how long it was to make, but the ingredients too. The flour of my samosa, the months growing in fields as waving sheaf’s of wheat grasses, the combineharvester cutting and collecting it all up, separating the wheat seeds, the drying and milling them fine. The lentils growing, the water and all the miles it’s travelled, the rice, seeded, grown and plucked in the paddi fields of India or china thousands of miles away, even the 20kg bags they are put into, the energy and time and resources shipping them over the world making money for the global economy before eventually ending up here, on my dinner plate... Do I deserve this? Is it fate...? About a year probably of global energy into this dish for me! Woahza!? ... Well, I don’t know if it’s the familiar homely India dhal, or perhaps the perfectly flakey basmati rice or maybe the little slice of fresh zesty lime accompanying my plate, but I think I just experienced divine Indian charm...
