Marcolino

Piazza Colombo is a small square that was created when the lower part of the town was finally built & put in order in nineteenth century. Four streets come & depart from it,full of traditional shops & delicatessen sales points. Don't expect any monumentality,just a cosy place where is difficult indeed to park. Enjoy a walk around,buy some traditional food & Ligurian items, starting from focaccia, troffie, cakes & croissants, marble mortars to make pesto. Absolutely reasonable prices everywhere.

La fontana di Piazza Colombo recentemente restaurata un tempo si trovava sul Ponte Reale davanti a Palazzo S. Giorgio. Nel 1643 fu commissionata dai facoltosi membri dei Protettori delle Compere a Pier Antonio e Ottavio Corradi (i progettisti della vasca) e realizzata da Giambattista Garrè. I quattro delfini capovolti invece sono opera di G.B. Orsolino mentre la statua alata, allegoria della fama, aggiunta nel 1673, è stata scolpita da Jacopo Garvo. La fontana venne traslocata da Ponte Reale a Piazza Colombo nel 1861 per abbellire la nuova piazza ottocentesca voluta dall’architetto Resasco. Non solo bellezza ma anche utilità visto che il barchile fungeva da abbeveratoio per cavalli e muli provenienti dalla campagna che vi transitavano carichi di verdure verso il Mercato Orientale. Oggi i suoi marmi sono stati ripuliti dalla fuliggine che la anneriva e riportati all’antico splendore. Nella piazza infine due lapidi meritano menzione: la prima ricorda i caduti sotto i bombardamenti dell’ultima guerra, la seconda omaggia la casa Natale del poeta dialettale Edoardo Firpo
