I stopped by Stir Cafe in Histon, Cambridge, this morning for breakfast, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag. I’d give it 3 out of 5 stars some tasty wins, but a concerning slip up. The food kicked off nicely. I was disappointed they were out of tiramisu to go with the banana bread, but the staff swapped it with a seared or fried banana that was a pleasant surprise caramelized and excellent, really elevating the dish. The coffee was another highlight, rich and well brewed, giving me a solid morning pick up. The cozy vibe of Stir Cafe, with its local charm, added to the experience too. Then came the downside. My second pastry, a plum bostock topped with mascarpone cream, had a sharp piece of plastic inside nearly cut my mouth at the last bite! It seemed to be from the lid of the cream, which makes it even more worrying. I didn’t toss it away since I only noticed it then, but it definitely took the shine off an otherwise good meal. I hope it was a one off, but it’s a big concern for a place serving food. Overall, Stir Cafe has potential with its tasty offerings and great coffee, and I’d pop back for the banana bread if they tighten up their quality control.
